Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg SyndromeMy husband suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS).  This condition causes him to uncontrollably move his legs.  It used to keep him up at night, and wake him up once asleep.  As you can imagine, this would lead to some pretty cranky days on his part.  And to top it off, sometimes the symptoms would occur during the daytime, making it difficult for him to sit for long periods of time (ie, during travel or in meetings at work).

The good news is, he is no longer suffering from RLS!  For the last few months he has been putting a couple of drops of doTERRA Lavender essential oil on the back of his knees and bottoms of his feet and it takes the symptoms away almost immediately!

There is no known cause for Restless Leg Syndrome. It is suspected that an imbalance of the chemical in the brain called dopamine may cause the muscle movement. Stress and anxiety can worsen the condition.

Because restless leg syndrome can result in a decreased quality of sleep, this can lead to daytime sleepiness, anxiety or depression, and confusion or slowed thought processes.

Prescription medications for RLS, such as Requip (ropinirole), originally developed for Parkinson’s disease, can cost $60 a month!  Not to mention the side effects -faintness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness and “intense urges.” A Mayo Clinic study revealed that compulsive gambling appeared in participants who took ropinirole when they had no previous history of gambling.

When the best cure medical science has to offer is worse than the disease, it is time to look for other treatments.

RLS is a whole body ailment that requires a multidisciplinary approach. Reduce or eliminate contributing factors from the diet–such as alcohol and caffeine. Get some exercise. Walk three times a week for at least 30 minutes. Make sure you are eating a well balanced diet with plenty of whole food nutrients.
